Although St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) started as a Christian holiday to commemorate Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland (who lived in the 4th century), it gradually became a public holiday in Ireland itself and a day to celebrate Irish culture and traditions in many other countries.
